2012 Samish Row & Paddle
The 2012 Samish Row & Paddle brought excitement and finish line grins as competitors slugged it out on the new extended 6.5 mile race course. Race conditions panned out to be flatwater slug fest and there were many different battles within the race. Fenn Athlete Gabe Newton, currently ranked #5 in the world, quickly left Don Kiesling and I in the the dust at the one mile and proceeded to hold a steady 8.3 mile/hour pace over the course. Ludovit Tatos & Peter Turcan teamed up in Fenn Elite Double and took top honors as fastest ski top double, edging out Gabe at the finish by 30 seconds. Local elder statesmen Reivers Dustin & Duncan Howat exchanged blows over the course with top female paddler Heather Nelson (hey Duncan, isn’t that out of class drafting!) in the mix to keep the fight fair – Duncan played the tactics well and took the age group win at the finish. Also of note, multisport super athletes E’Lana Ecker & Debbie Arthur rocked the course an Elite Double and Kevin Olney (who stopped to assist a capsized K-1) is being noticed more as a front pack regular as he quietly finds his speed wings.
Congratulations to E’Lana Ecker who won the Fenn 3 paddle donated by Ocean Paddlesports.
Big thanks to all the race organizers and race volunteers who continue to make this one of the best paddling races in the country.
